Start with color and stretch
Duller color than when it was new is an early sign, often showing first along the high-stretch areas at center front or back. Sagging or looseness means the elastic fibers have already broken down.
Check the surface and the smell
Rough or scratchy fabric, small holes, pilling, or thin spots all point to damage already in progress. A chlorine smell that survives a wash is the same kind of signal.
Two or more signs together mean it’s time
Any two of these signs showing up at once is a reasonable point to replace the suit. Feeling less confident in the fit is reason enough on its own.
